Kollom, Ernst
Ernst Kollom (18 December 1908 Koiola parish, Võru County – 17 October 1974 Tallinn), a graphic artist, Gita Teearu´s husband.
He was born to a small farmer´s family, in years 1923–27 studied at Tartu Boys' Gymnasium of Sciences, in 1927–31 he studied painting in the Art School Pallas at the studio of Nikolai Triik and in 1943–45 graphics at Moscow Art Institute under the supervision of Pavel Pavlinov. In years 1933–40 he worked as a freelance artist in Tartu, 1940–41 as an art and technical editor in the publishing house Teaduslik Kirjandus (Scientific Literature). In 1941 he evacuated to the hinterland of the Soviet Union, 1942–43 acted as a scholar in the Estonian SSR Council of People´s Commissars. In years 1946–48 he worked in Tallinn in the publishing house Ilukirjandus ja Kunst (Fiction and Art) and 1949–52 in the editorial board of the magazine Nõukogude Naine (Soviet Woman), in years 1952–54 in the Institute of History, 1955–56 in the editorial board of the magazine Nõukogude Põllumajandus (Soviet Agriculture), since 1956 again as a freelance artist. Since 1943 a member of the Artists' Association (1948–57 deleted from the list).
Kollom is one of Estonia’s most productive book graphic artists. In 1939 he was awarded the prize of Estonian Book Foundation for his book illustrations and in 1940 the Estonian Paper prize, in 1947 he was awarded the Soviet Estonian prize. Together with Hando Mugasto and Arkadio Laigo he was the founder of the Estonian xylograph tradition.
Ernst Kollom and Ruhnu
In the 1960s until the 1970s he worked and spend his summers on Ruhnu, the views of Ruhnu have also been his motives („Ruhnu old wooden church” 1969, linoleic). In 1971 he bought the Bullers farm for spending his summers. At the moment, the artist´s daughter Ariina Kollom is living on the island, managing the West Bulders tourist farm.
