Ruhnu has had a school since 1852, the local church was providing education before then. Studies have always been carried out in joint classes. In 1875 a new parsonage was built (the old one burned down in 1865) and since then the school has been located at the former parsonage building. In 1900, the school had 6 grades; in 1932 there were 43 students. Until the Second World War, lessons were conducted in Swedish. In 1945 it was opened as a 7-grade school and was called Ruhnu Incomplete Secondary School. Since then lessons have been carried out in Estonian. In 1962, it was turned into an 8-grade school. In 1969 a choir stage was built on the school territory. 1978-79 the school was closed due to the lack of students; it was re-opened as a 3-grade elementary school. In 1987 it was turned into an 8-grade school and in 1991 into a 9-grade one; since that time the school has been called Ruhnu Basic School. The school has been managed for a long period by Linda Aus (1956-82) and by Ants Pirso (2002-12). In 2013 procurement was announced for the construction of a new school house.
